Spring is one of the most beautiful times to drive through the New Forest. The trees are in leaf, wildflowers are blooming, and the weather is warming up. But spring also brings unique driving challenges that you need to be aware of to stay safe.
Watch Out for Ponies and Deer
The New Forest is home to around 3,500 semi-wild ponies, plus deer, pigs, and cattle that roam freely. In spring, foals are born and mothers are protective. Ponies often graze near the road and can suddenly step into traffic. Slow down in areas where you see animals, use your horn gently if needed, and never try to feed or pet them — they can bite and kick.
Narrow Forest Roads
Many New Forest roads are narrow, winding, and overgrown. Branches can hang low and scratch your car. Drive slowly and be prepared to stop or reverse if you meet another vehicle. Use your headlights even during the day — it makes you more visible to other drivers and helps you spot hazards ahead.
Spring Showers and Wet Roads
Spring weather is changeable. Heavy showers can make roads slippery, and standing water can cause aquaplaning. Reduce speed in wet conditions, increase your following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Check your tyres are in good condition and properly inflated — worn tyres lose grip in wet weather.
Potholes and Road Damage
Winter weather damages roads, and spring reveals the damage. Potholes can cause punctures and suspension damage. Drive carefully and report serious potholes to the New Forest District Council. If you hit a pothole and damage your car, you may be able to claim compensation — keep photos and get a repair quote.
Mud and Debris on Roads
Spring is busy for forestry work and farm machinery. Mud, branches, and debris can end up on the road. Drive carefully and watch for sudden obstacles. If you see debris, slow down and be prepared to stop.
Visitor Traffic
Spring brings tourists and day-trippers to the New Forest. Car parks fill up, and roads become busier. Allow extra time for journeys, be patient with slower drivers, and watch for pedestrians stepping into the road without looking.
Car Maintenance Before Spring Drives
Before heading into the forest, check your car: tyres (tread depth and pressure), brakes, lights, and windscreen wipers. A breakdown in a remote area is inconvenient and potentially dangerous. If you need a pre-drive check, visit AVS Bransgore — we are just outside the forest in Bransgore and can get you road-ready in 30 minutes.
Enjoy Responsibly
The New Forest is a special place. Drive slowly, respect the wildlife, and leave no trace. If you see an injured animal, contact the New Forest Wildlife Rescue. If you see a car in distress, stop and offer help if safe to do so.
