How Much Does an MOT Cost in 2026? Everything You Need to Know

27 February 20265 min read

The MOT test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old in the UK. But how much should you actually be paying for one? The answer is simpler than you might think, but there are some important things to understand about what is and is not included in the price.

The Maximum MOT Fee

The government sets a maximum fee that MOT testing stations can charge. For cars (up to 8 passenger seats), the current maximum is 54.85 pounds. For motorcycles, it is 29.65 pounds. For motorhomes and larger vehicles, the fee is higher.

Many garages charge the full maximum fee, but some charge less. At AVS Bransgore, we charge a competitive rate for MOT testing — give us a ring on 01425 200826 for our current price.

What Is Included in the MOT Fee?

The MOT fee covers the test itself and the issuing of the certificate (or failure notification). It does not include any repairs that might be needed if your vehicle fails. This is an important distinction — the test and the repairs are separate things.

Some garages offer combined MOT and service packages, which can be good value if your car is due for both. We offer this at AVS Bransgore, and it often makes sense to have both done at the same time to save on labour costs.

What Happens If You Fail?

If your car fails the MOT, you have 10 working days to get the issues fixed and return for a free partial retest at the same testing station. The partial retest only covers the items that failed — you do not have to pay for a full retest. If you go to a different testing station, or if you take longer than 10 working days, you will need to pay for a full retest.

Can You Get Your MOT Done Early?

Yes. You can have your MOT done up to one calendar month before the expiry date, and the new certificate will run from the old expiry date. This means you do not lose any time by getting it done early. We recommend booking a week or two before your MOT is due — this gives you time to get any repairs done if needed without your MOT expiring.

How to Avoid Overpaying

The biggest cost associated with an MOT is not the test itself — it is the repairs. Some garages have been known to fail vehicles on borderline items to generate repair work. The best way to protect yourself is to choose a garage you trust. Look for one with good reviews, a long track record, and a reputation for honest advice.

At AVS Bransgore, we have been doing MOTs for over 25 years. We will always tell you honestly what needs fixing, what is advisory (not a fail but worth keeping an eye on), and what can wait. We would rather you pass and come back for repairs when it suits you than fail you unnecessarily.

Pre-MOT Checks You Can Do Yourself

Before your MOT, there are several things you can check yourself to avoid an unnecessary fail: make sure all lights are working (this is the number one fail reason), check your tyre tread depth is above 1.6mm, make sure your windscreen wipers work and the washers spray, check your horn works, and make sure your number plates are clean and legible. These simple checks take five minutes and could save you the hassle of a retest.
