How Much Does a Campervan Conversion Cost in 2026?

24 March 20268 min read

One of the first questions anyone asks when they start thinking about a campervan conversion is: how much is this actually going to cost? The honest answer is that it depends enormously on what you want, but we can give you some realistic figures based on the conversions we do every week at AVS Bransgore.

The total cost of a campervan conversion breaks down into two parts: the base vehicle and the conversion itself. Let us look at each one.

Buying a Base Vehicle

The most popular base vehicles for campervan conversions in the UK are the Volkswagen Transporter T5 and T6, the Mercedes Sprinter, the Ford Transit, the Peugeot Boxer, and the Fiat Ducato. Prices vary enormously depending on age, mileage, and condition.

A decent used VW Transporter T5 with reasonable mileage will cost between 8,000 and 15,000 pounds. A newer T6 or T6.1 will be 18,000 to 30,000 pounds. Larger panel vans like the Sprinter or Transit start from around 5,000 for older models up to 25,000 for newer low-mileage examples.

Our advice is always to buy the best base vehicle you can afford. A cheaper van with hidden mechanical problems will cost you more in the long run. We are happy to inspect any van before you buy it — a pre-purchase inspection costs far less than discovering a gearbox problem after you have spent thousands on the conversion.

Budget Conversion: 3,000 to 8,000 Pounds

A budget conversion is perfect for weekend warriors and festival-goers. This typically includes a basic bed platform with storage underneath, a simple 12V electrical system with a leisure battery and USB charging, basic insulation and cladding, and perhaps a portable gas stove setup. You will not get running water or a fixed kitchen at this price point, but you will have a comfortable, functional campervan for weekend trips.

Mid-Range Conversion: 8,000 to 18,000 Pounds

This is where most of our customers land. A mid-range conversion includes a proper fixed kitchen with sink, hob, and running water from a built-in tank. You get a full 12V electrical system with a quality leisure battery, LED lighting throughout, and multiple USB and 12V outlets. Insulation is done properly with closed-cell foam and thermal lining. You get fitted furniture, a comfortable bed, and usually a pop-top roof for extra headroom and sleeping space.

At AVS Bransgore, our pop-top installations start from around 2,500 pounds, and a full 12V electrical package starts from 3,000 pounds. A complete kitchen build with sink, hob, and worktop runs from around 2,000 to 4,000 pounds depending on materials and specification.

Premium Conversion: 18,000 to 35,000 Pounds

A premium conversion is a home on wheels. This includes everything in the mid-range plus 240V mains power with an inverter, a diesel heater for winter use, a hot water system, a proper shower or wet room, high-end furniture and finishes, a full solar panel setup, and often a swivel seat and rock and roll bed. Some customers also add awning rails, bike racks, and external shower points.

What Affects the Price?

Several factors push the cost up or down. The size of the van matters — a Sprinter conversion costs more than a Transporter simply because there is more space to fit out. Material choices make a big difference too — solid oak furniture costs more than lightweight ply. Electrical complexity is another factor — a simple leisure battery setup is much cheaper than a full lithium system with solar and an inverter.
