Brake Maintenance & Safety: A Complete Guide

27 April 20266 min read

Your brakes are arguably the most important safety system on your car. Faulty brakes can lead to accidents, injuries, and hefty repair bills. Yet many drivers neglect brake maintenance until something goes wrong. Here is what you need to know about keeping your brakes in top condition.

How Your Brakes Work

Most modern cars use a hydraulic disc brake system. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic fluid is forced through pipes to the brake calipers, which squeeze the brake pads against the brake disc (rotor). This friction slows the car down. Over time, the brake pads wear away and need replacing.

Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

Do not wait for a warning light to appear. Watch for these signs: a soft or spongy brake pedal (indicates air in the brake lines or worn pads), a grinding noise when braking (metal-on-metal contact — pads are worn through), a burning smell after hard braking (overheated brakes), or the car pulling to one side when braking (uneven pad wear or a seized caliper).

Brake Pad Replacement

Brake pads typically last 25,000 to 70,000 miles depending on your driving style and road conditions. Aggressive braking, lots of city driving, and towing wear pads faster. Once pads are worn to 2mm thickness, they should be replaced. Replacing pads early is far cheaper than replacing damaged discs.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which reduces its effectiveness and can cause corrosion inside the brake system. Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid change every 2 years or 20,000 miles. Neglecting this can lead to brake failure in extreme conditions.

Brake Disc Resurfacing vs Replacement

If your brake discs are scored or worn but not damaged, they can often be resurfaced (skimmed) to save money. However, if they are cracked, warped, or worn below the minimum thickness, they must be replaced. Warped discs cause a pulsing sensation in the brake pedal.

Winter Brake Care

Cold weather and salt on the roads can accelerate brake corrosion. If your car has been sitting unused, brakes may feel spongy until the system warms up. Regular driving helps keep brakes in good condition. If you notice rust on the discs after a period of non-use, a few gentle brake applications will usually clean it off.
